Outcomes
Horizons has a long history of program evaluation, including three studies out of Yale University. Over each six-week summer session, HNYC scholars show consistent gains in literacy and math of on average, 2-3 months as measured by pre- and post-standardized assessments. Our programs not only mitigate learning loss, but also send children back to school academically ahead of where they were at the end of the previous school-year.
In addition to academic gains, evaluations consistently find that over one six-week summer session, Horizons scholars:
- Improve social skills
- Show increased self-confidence and motivation
- Demonstrate greater willingness to try new things
- Record higher school-year attendance
- Develop greater interest in nutrition
- Learn to swim
- Show improved graduation rates, and increased rates of continuing education or training after high school
