History & Background

Formerly known as Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School, Horizons Brooklyn is one of three HNYC affiliate sites, and beginning in 2008, is our longest operating program! BFS was the first New York City independent school to partner with Horizons National and host a Horizons program on its campus.

While our partnership with BFS ended in 2020, we currently continue to serve our students at other community locations around the Downtown Brooklyn area. We want to extend a special thanks to Greene Hill School and the Brooklyn Navy Yard for hosting our 2021 summer program!

HBK provides up to 135 public school children, predominantly from underserved communities in Brooklyn, the access to our free, six-week summer academic program and school-year enrichment programming. Because HBK has been operating for almost fifteen years, we have been able to see many of our kindergarten students grow into eighth-graders, and successfully complete the entire course of the Horizons program! We have even welcomed back these former students as volunteers, assistant teachers, and HorizonsPlus teachers. Having the experience of seeing first-hand how effective the Horizons program model is over time, HBK sets an absolutely fantastic example for other program sites within the HNYC region, and even among the entire Horizons National network.
