What We Provide

A comprehensive academic program: During our six-week summer program, HNYC program sites provide a rich curriculum focused on literacy, math, science, and cultural enrichment. Academically, we operate in alignment with the Common Core State Standards, and tailor curriculum to strengthen and reinforce traditional academic subjects. Incorporating enrichment activities into our curriculum is critical in balancing the development of the whole child.

Adherence to our mission statement: All together, the daily functions of HNYC program sites work to provide access, opportunity, and guidance for under-served public school students. We provide professional faculty and a nurturing environment, where students can better recognize their full potential!

HorizonsPlus after-school care: During both the summer program, and throughout the regular school year, we provide Horizons students and families with after-school care. Here, students focus on social-emotional learning through organized group play, specialty classes and extra-curricular activities including: visual arts, theater, dance, West-African drumming, chorus, recorder lessons, music production, and jazz band. Furthermore, tutoring is provided to our middle school students focusing on preparation for their transition to high school.

Swimming instruction and healthy development: Learning to swim is a key component of the Horizons student experience. Becoming a competent swimmer builds confidence and a desire to achieve. Moreover, swimming is a life-saving skill that children from under-served communities are less likely to have access to. 100% of HNYC students pass all criteria for Red Cross safety skills in the water, at each level, every summer.

Quarterly enrichment events: Four times a year, HNYC programs sites host a special event for students and their families. They range from Super Science Saturday, where we explore the power of science and have visits from animal sanctuaries, to Sip & Paint mornings where we sip hot chocolate and make crafts together! These events are intended to maintain consistent interaction between faculty and students, therefore building trust and allowing students to fully embrace their time in the summer program. These events also provide space for critical familial bonding among students and loved ones.
